...because they were apparently using windows
Once again Lovey is 100% incorrect. Here are some clues (since you have none):

Breach may have exposed donor information
Hacker causes Notre Dame's first significant computer security intrusion
http://www.ndsmcobserver.com/media/paper660/news/2006/01/23/News/Breach.May.Have.Exposed.Donor.Information-1493395.shtml?norewrite&sourcedomain=www.ndsmcobserver.com

"The server, which is not part of the University's central data system, was used for inter-office file sharing in the Development Office, Wishon said."

Hmm, a file-sharing server in an office environment... Let's look further...

Notre Dame investigating apparent computer hacking
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060124/NEWS01/601240460/1006/NEWS01

"The University of Notre Dame was investigating an apparent computer hacking that may have allowed access to images of checks sent to the university by donors."

And a scanner was used to apparently scan check images...

ND detects breach in donor info
Official says intruder may have accessed some computer records.
http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060123/News01/601230318/CAT=News01
"The Tribune on Sunday that a security software detected an intrusion on a server housing donor information sometime between Nov. 22 and Jan. 12."

Holy cow, that is an embarrasment - what a span of time to go without detection! An administrator clearly did not set this up.

Let's sum it up:
-development office environment
-file sharing
-images of donation checks
-"home user" install, setup and config, no apparent security configuration.

Well my analysis shows a typical office worker who was clueless configured this system for simple file sharing and was bitten by the "click me to be comprimised" through IM, web or email exploit.
