If we accept that is the user behaviour then why does the OS let it happen.

Name one OS that, by default, stops the user from running programs.

And you compare this to dismissing a dialogue in Outlook?

If your reading comprehension was above a 1st grade level, you would have read that Outlook doesn't even let PIFs or SCRs through at all so technically speaking, it has been impossible to receive these files for the last couple versions of Outlook. However, even Outlook Express and Security Center (SP2) make you jump through hoops to get attachments to run. The people who got this are either on very old/unpatched versions of Windows or really, really wanted to watch their porn and would have taken the 2 steps required to run this on Linux.

Absolute rubbish. The *nix family has many tool in the administrators bag of trick to prevent these things. You can very easily prevent users from being able to run executables that have not been set-up by an administrator - period no exceptions.

Actually, you are right, I goofed here, I forgot about Windows Software Restriction Policies which can be used to lock down an XP Pro machine in the same way. Unfortunately, I do not believe that this is available for XP Home but I also wonder how many people in the home would bother setting that up for either Windows or Linux.

What's more, unlike the crap slapped together in the windows world where many apps can't even run with restricted permissions, the superior design of *nix programs allows these restrictions to be put in place and the system will function.

The FUD is strong within you! Don't you feel the slightest moral twinge when you spout known falsehoods? Oh, wait, you mean you actually believe this stuff? Even worse!

This is an area that has gotten MUCH better in the last few years. As mentioned in another post, the restricted rights user I'm using right now was a breeze to setup and while I can't say 100% of the apps have installed 100% perfectly, I can say that the 5% of apps that didn't install perfectly only took a few seconds to fix.

You did get a chuckle out of me with your superior design of *nix programs though! Good job!

If you keep bleating "the user is dumb" then how about demanding from Redmond an OS that protect them from themselves.

It is actually the Linux zealots who keep bleating that the user is dumb, I'm careful to use the words "savvy" and "naive" instead of "smart" and "dumb". I do demand that Redmond provide better defaults and port more security features into XP Home... no excuses there. The OS is technically up to the task and the 3rd party apps are finally being written properly. If Linux doesn't make inroads in the home soon, it might not make it. I don't say this with glee since my non gaming desktop is Linux and if it had more of a marketshare in the home, I would see more home type support for it. Too bad. sad My only hope is that Linux continues to make inroads in the office and this translates to more people trying it out at home.

After years of this same type of attack we have yet another piece of windows malware and still they apologise for MS.

This is malware targetting Windows users, it isn't even targetting Windows. I'm not apologizing for MS, I'm apologizing for your "naivete" (I'm too polite to use the word "dumb" wink ).
