Well, since they're replacing the CD and giving you the MP3s (so you won't mind that you can't rip your own), presumably their response would be that the $7.50 is compensation for your time spent cleaning out or rebuilding your PC.

Interestingly, although we're dealing with people who elected to buy a CD over download in the first place there is no option for a pure cash settlement. I would assume that many of the people who purchased the CD don't download at all so the downloads would have no value to them, serving only to spark interest in Sony's download sales. It's a promotion tool, pure and simple. (Similar to the recent Netflix settlement, although in the Netflix case I didn't feel that Netflix was in the wrong and owed the customer anything.)

But no matter how you dice it, your point stands that the RIAA numbers are seriously out of line with this settlement.
You may also recall the class action settlement for the price fixing of CDs a few years back. Each consumer got 9.50 or something, regardless of how many overpriced CDs they bought during the many years of gouging. Seems this industry has a long running disconnect between the value they assign their product and the price they expect us to pay.
