Why has the world refused to create a .kids domain? Or .young or .child or .good? Some domain where it is a finable offense to link to anything outside that domain, or even use IP Addresses in the linked URLs. Where all the morality groups can search for anything the slightest bit offensive, so parents can install a browser (or an add-in) that keeps their children in that domain.
Maybe we need a few of these so we can split the groups that find different things offensive:
1. No pigs on farms.
2. No cows on farms.
3. No talking animals (or anything else that could be considered magical.)
I am certain Disney would create sites for each domain, even if they had to censor most of their movies and were not allowed to link to their main site. People would quickly create enough content to make it fun for children.
New top-level domains (TLDs) were created recently, but I do not see URLs to them. COM is still the one everybody assumes, enough that even if you say the address ends in .NET, people still type it wrong. COM is supposed to contain only commercial interests, but it also conatins personal sites. NET is for infrastructure, but it is also used for a variety of sites including much porn. ORG is for non-profit groups, and does contain religious and open-source sites, but it also contains porn. There are other domains for other countries, but the main US-focused domains all contain porn. Most US parents do not want their children accessing porn, since an uncovered female breast is apparently more offensive than organized displays of violence (sports, movies).
When there are enough TLDs that COM loses its monopoly in our minds, and the TLD actually means something because its purpose is clear, the internet will be a much friendlier place. - Posted by: solprovider Posted on: 02/10/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
