That's valuable
---I don't think they're going to market very much to me as I
tend
to listen to...um...rather old stuff by artists that either aren't
around anymore or have given up recording a long time ago.---

But what if their reporting system shows them that a significant
portion of their customers are just like you? Wouldn't this be
valuable information that they could use to change the store to
better appeal to you and the hordes like you?

certain genre of music. Is it really any different than a friend
asking whether you're heard a certain band? ---

It'd be nice if it worked that way, but mostly, if you're playing a
song by artist X, the iTunes mini-store will recommend that you
buy other songs by the same artist. Not exactly useful for
discovery.

---What you're getting in return, IF it's being used for
marketing, is
intelligence. You get information in return about other artists
that exist within a genre that you enjoy.---

As I said, you're not quite getting this yet, though I assume at
some point they'll improve the system. But it's up to each
individual--is that a valuable thing? Is that worth giving up my
information and privacy? For some, yes, for others, no.
