tracking usage/purchasing patterns
Apple, and every other company, is always conducting studies to find out more about consumer behavior and why they choose to buy what they wind up buying. By Apple examining playlists, they can decipher how people are grouping their music, and can then make predictions on what people want/are looking for.
Let me give you an example: let's say your customers are always buying peanut butter and jelly. Yet until you looked at their usage patterns, you never knew that they were routinely making PB&J sandwiches out of them. Learning that enables you to plan future products/upsells (ex.-a jar of combo peanut butter and jelly, etc.)
