I've been playing around with this new "MiniStore" (new in iTunes
6.0.2) and it appears to send the info in the artist tag back to
Apple where a query is run for album titles related to that artist.
Also the same query comes up with a selection of other titles
based on what "Other Listener's bought." For instance, I select
(you have to actually select, random or sequential selections do
seem to initiate a query) Right Place, Wrong Time - Dr. John and
I get a selection of 4 Dr. John albums and a Listeners Also
Bought list comprised of:

Ray Charles
BB King
Quincy Jones
Default
Bill Cosby
Frank Sinatra
David Bowie
Charlie Watts
Bob Dylan

(Defualt???)

Yet when I select a Beatles track I get "No Match"

So I feel "monitor" is the wrong word here because it implies that
a constant, autonomous listening is going on. That's not actually
the case. However, Info is being passed to Apple based on your
actual selections if the MiniStore is turned on, however there's
been big threads about this on Slashdot and other sites. Apple
has apparently already responded saying that all data is
discarded at the end of each query function and that no data is
passed if the MiniStore is turned of (Edit/hide MiniStore).

This is the first I've heard of any account related number being
passed and I'll wait to hear an explanation of that before
freaking out. Besides, I'm an iTMS customer an they already have
my info. If my account number is being passed, I would suspect
that it will be used to update my "Just For You" database info.

But overall, I do agree with you and ShadeTree on this one,
Apple should make this an opt-in feature, if only to quell privacy
fears.

Will I stop using it? No, I think it's a really cool feature and
potentially a great way to discover new music. I'm going to keep
playing with it happy

Cheers
