Maybe if they take a look at my probably 90% pirated collection, they can figure out who they need to make a deal with in order to sell it. Maybe if they figure out who their users listen to, they could make those tracks legally available.

Hypothetically all the Beatles fans that have Beatles music on their iPods would get tracked and then Apple goes to Michael Whacko and says "look at these millions of Beatles fans likely stealing music, why not make some money off them?" Same goes for Garth Brooks. Only two ways to get either artist on your iPod....buy the CD and rip it or download for free.

Why not try to take this data and strike a deal? There would be money in it for everyone where there is likely none currently.

I would love to buy music, but in order for me to do that, what I want has to be available in a non-DRM format so I can move it place to place and not care about having to find some license.

On the same token, I don't think I will be upgrading iTunes anytime soon due to this.
