Now You are Really Showing Your Ignorance
C'mon folks, just because you have a hard-on for bashing MS at any opportunity - regardless of whether the issue is even about MS to begin with - have some pride and don't let it show how ignorant you are. Yeah, yeah, you might be the brightest geek on the block, but big deal. Solid geeks are a dime-a-dozen anymore. You prefer Linux, or whatever flavor of *nix, good for you. Leave the rest of us out of it.

Now for the facts: (1) The Norton Protected Recycle Bin has been around for many, MANY years. It is a utility to try to help average users recover when they might happen to make a mistake and delete something they shouldn't have. It wasn't designed for uber-geeks like you all - you Linux-types never make mistakes, right?!? - so don't use it. (2) The NProtect utility is not - repeat NOT - part of Norton Anti-Virus, as "jinko" seems to believe. It is part of Norton Utilities and, as a result, is included in the Norton System Works utility suite. Yes, NAV is in the NSW suite as well, but the NProtect util and protected recycle bin are NOT part of NAV. (3) Trojans and other such threats that would use root-kit technology are malware, but they are not viruses. They may be a payload of a virus, but are not viruses in and of themselves. The fact that NAV and other AV products can now scan for these types of malware is a nice addition in functionality, but to expect them to catch all such malware - especially advanced techniques - is naive at best.

If NAV didn't know to scan this hidden folder, or specifically excluded it because it "knew" it was part of a legit utility, how is that an error with NAV? This is a case of Symantec openly admitting that they simply didn't realize previously the issue this might create. Nothing more. No conspiracies. Now that they realize the new circumstances, they acted. And quickly.

And jinko, even WITH the NProtect util installed, a file delete does not take twelve steps. If it took you that much effort, perhaps you are not the geek you think you are.

Now, off my soapbox and back to a life. Your ignorant MS-bashing banter can now resume.
