I'm not sure if this will help, but I did a rather dumb thing a little while back and this somehow reminds me of that.
I was able to get the Outlook to bring in the mail, I could see it coming an then nothing.
I would look everywhere and found nothing. Checked all the connections and did all the usual, then it hit me I went into my Outlook Express settings and started checking in there.
Turns out everything was set to refuse entry or "Not " to open attachment, etc etc.
Then I checked the Outlook Express itself and found that is was set to show nothing instead of show all messages.
Needless to say I felt foolish, but somewhere along the line, I had done something that caused all of the above to shut down and so had to redo the configuration on them.
Perhaps you're facing something along the same lines?
