It's a bit easier to detect fraud if there are live bodies showing up at the polls where people suspected of being inelligible can be challenged and the votes are counted publicly.

My suspicion is that if Internet voting becomes widespread, election officials will be trusted to keep confidentiality in much the same way corporate sysadmins are expected to keep confidences on the computers for which they are responsible, which is a lot like trusting confessors, only scarier.

The system is certainly not perfect, but we don't need to make it worse without compelling reasons for doing so.

So... I ask the original question: how do you secure votes cast over a public network without compromising secrecy?
