My experience is different
A few points...

The thread was about desktop use not server use. We've been running Win2k/2k3/xp for 5 years now, and have not allowed people admin access to their workstations all that time. IN five years it has gotten much easier to make programs run as non-admin because a lot more of the newer programs are coded to do so.

As for it being 'almost impossible' to run as non-admin, that's pure hyperbole. It's no more impossible to run windows as non-admin than it is to run unix as non-admin. The fact that mos Windows admins don't know s!@# about how Windows works is the reason for this perception.

As for that little logo your talking about, no, I havn't see that thing ever, but most server apps for Windows I've seen can be configured to run as limited users. It's just a matter of figuring out what system objets they need access to and granting those permissions. In the vasy majority of cases, it's just a directory and one registry key.

Think about this. Most UNIX deamons come installed by default running as root, but this doesn't stop competent admins from chrooting those programs. In UNIX you can't burn CD's as a non root user without changing a few things here and there. Why are you holding Windows admins and users to a different standard than UNIX admins?

Windows has dug their own hole as far as making users in XP admin by default, but they have stressed repeatedly to developers for years now that it is important to code programs with least privilege in mind, but programmers have, for the most part, taken the path of least resistance. Yeah, that sucks, but it doesn't mean practicing least priviledge in Windows is anywhere near impossible.
