Correction - not a shill (look it up)
I am a Microsoft MVP, stated here many times. To answer this:

"I'm just curious, what kind of time and financial investment do you make to preserve that level of protection? How many third-party products have you purchased to preserve your security? And how much time a week do you spend configuring and updating those products?"

Answer 1. - very little time. I believe in setting up and securing a network and then automating tasks.

Answer 2. - again, very little. I am afforded the opportunity to use vendor's products gratis due to my MVP status.

Answer 3. - see answer 2.

Answer 4. - maybe an hour. Ensuring the AV on the Exchange server updates correctly, ensuring WSUS got what it needs, checking the automatic scheduled services, etc.

I am sorry that you have such a bad opinion of Microsoft and its products. Fortunately, you are in the minority. The rest of us use what works for us and move on. Spending time hating is worse than spending time patching. At least with patching, you get something positive.
