Can't live with it, can't live without it
"As I said, the failure so far to secure WindowsXP makes me believe Microsoft should have heeded my words several years ago and break compatibility with legacy apps with Vista. I think everyone, in and out of Microsoft, knows deep down this must happen at some point, so far no one at Microsoft has had the gonads to make the call..."

The reason doing this is so scary to Microosft is that the last company that did it almost put themselves out of business. When Apple moved from the Apple IIe to the Macintosh, they had a very healthy marketshare. They completly broke legacy compatibiolity and rendered everyones investment into the Apple IIe worthless. A hige chunk of their customers never moved over to the Mac. Instead they bought a PC - and the rest is history.

I too wish Microsoft would break, or at least severely limit backward compatibility in Vista, but I understand their motivation behind keeping it.
