Hacks and Vista. Yes I said Vista...
What many people don't fully realize is that WindowsXP - SP2 contained much of the security *smarts* from the long awaited Vista version of Windows. In fact many (most?) of the security experts that were working on Vista were pulled away to work on SP2. As we see Vista being repeatedly postponed I can't help but wonder how much of it is based upon MS being afraid to release it. If you have read any of the Microsoft PR they tell us Vista is the next thing next to Ft. Knox, but the evidence is that when put into use in SP2 it wasn't quite what they had billed it as. I honestly can't see how there has been any reduction in hacks of WinXP SP2 compared to earlier versions/patches.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I do not believe it is possible to re-write Windows securly and maintain legacy support of old code. Far too many applications (including MS Office) require admin privilages and you can not protect the system from the admin. He/she may actually need to do something...

As I said, the failure so far to secure WindowsXP makes me believe Microsoft should have heeded my words several years ago and break compatibility with legacy apps with Vista. I think everyone, in and out of Microsoft, knows deep down this must happen at some point, so far no one at Microsoft has had the gonads to make the call...
