Hi, mjb.

As far as the scripts go, my point wasn't really that MSN Messenger couldn't be uninstalled. It was that MSN Messenger was designed not to be uninstalled (as opposed, say, to having an uninstall program, or at least an item on the Add/Remove Programs screen). In my eyes, that's a sign of negligent, if not malicious programming. Any IM app does pose the same risks, as far as I know, but other apps of that nature a) have to be installed (rather than coming with the system), b) can be uninstalled easily, and c) don't embed themselves in the OS (which I guess can be considered part of b).

I do agree that it's very difficult to get these kinds of malware problems on your system if you know what you're doing.
