- MS vs. Linux
-
I have been reading the slings and arrows from
both sides of the MS/Linux debate on this forum
over a year now ad before I give my perspective
on the issue let me share a little background on
my self.
I wrote my first computer program in high school
on an Apple I. I work in a technical field but
am not an IT type. I love playing around with
computers in my spare time (not game playing
though). I consider myself a geek. I love Linux
and use it almost exclusively on my personal
laptop. Furthermore, once I get a copy of VMware
installed, the MS partition will disappear from
my hard drive completely. However, here are my
reasons that Linux will probably never surpass
Microsoft in desktop installations:
1.Average user ignorance: The average user is
basically an idiot when it comes to
understanding computers. They just want to point
and click and call technical support when they
have trouble. Linux advocates: Do you really
want this type of person tinkering in Linux?
2.Eye Candy: Face it Linux folks. MS beats Linux
right out of the box when it comes to the eye
candy department. However, a person willing to
spend some time in Linux can install some
impressive eye candy as well, just not out of
the box.
3.Computing Communism: This is probably the most
compelling reason. Microsoft Server with Active
Directory has allowed IT Departments to form
their own little pockets of totalitarianism.
They lock down user systems so tight, the user
can not even install a small piece of software
they need without contacting their company's
Gestapo. This is done under the disguise of
systems protection and standardization. I'll let
the reader draw their own conclusions regarding
the real reasons for this.
Linux advocates make the following claims
regarding Windows and to date I have not found
any Windows advocate successfully refute them:
1.Windows is a hardware resource hog.
2.It is buggy, even with XP SP2.
3.Windows security as it exists today, sucks.
I have proven these points with my own hardware.
One of my 2.0Ghz, 512mb memory machines at home
used to slog running XP SP2. Under Fedora Core 4
running KDE it flys and I have not had one virus
attack or BSOD since switching to it and the
computer runs 24/7 on my DSL.
In short Linux folks, Microsoft is for the
masses with its almost idiot proof interface.
Can Linux get there?
Sure.
However, until a single organization takes
control, refines it for the mass market, and
persuades others to adopt open multimedia file
formats, it will not happen.
However, I will stick with Linux. Take shots at
me if you will, Gates disciples. I prefer my
freedom.
P.S. Since the subject will be brought up by the
zealots. The only reason I have a MS partition
on my machine is because I run ham radio
applications written for Windows. - Posted by: linux4ever Posted on: 12/28/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
