Yeah, about that...
You're right. That won't work in Ubuntu. You'll have to:

sudo apt-get install gcc
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install xdev

And whatever libs you may need, depending opn what you're trying to compile.

Of course, I'd just download the binary files myself...
