Viruses, Spam, Etc.
Hi, trm1945.

You said:

My ISP has abuse and report spam departments to which I'm suppose to send complaints. These complaints are supposed to be dealt with. Well, so far I've received 8 copies of the same virus
and I've sent each and every one of them back to the abuse department. Their response was "The email address of your message was faked. The real address is xxxxx and you should send an email to abuse@xxxx and report this violation. My response to my ISP wasn't quite so restrained or polite.

That's pretty typical. I've sent out so many e-mails to abuse@****.com, that I can't even begin to count them. There are usually two problems:

1) The place you think the e-mail came from isn't where it really came from (which is why I look very hard at the full headers).

2) My ISP doesn't take any responsibility for things that get in -- only things that get out. I've had some success when I could show that the offending e-mail came from my ISP, but when it came from outside, there's been nothing. Even tracking down the offending ISP is of limited value: You might get to the point where they say they'll look into it, but there's usually no follow-up where they tell you that the problematic user has been punished.

Personally, I think intentionally sending viruses or spam should be a criminal matter, meaning immediate arrest for the offender. The problem is that as tough as you make any law, it only applies to the country which passes it. If a German company sends spam to the U.S., there's not a lot that can currently be done. There need to be international laws to deal with this situation. Call it Internet pollution, and then the EU will be all over it. wink
