>>Nextel needs to stop paying 700 Million dollars in feabile attempts to "buy" NASCAR fans and instead spend & the Millions they will spend on their broadband attempts and spend the money on their current system.<<

From a marketing standpoint the 700 million is well spent for growing the company. It has been proven time and again in numerous marketing studies that NASCAR fans have more product loyalty then the fans of all the other sports put together. If a company sponsors a NASCAR ride whether it be Tide, Corn Flakes, or Viagra (chuckle) more often than not, the true NASCAR fan will buy that brand of product.

If Nextel can pick up their share of NASCAR fans it will be a huge boom for their market share. It was announced that Nextel is going to station mobile wireless command centers at all the tracks so that the spectators can access real-time data such as lap speeds, position, etc on their handheld devices which I think where some of this broadband project is coming from.

Call me old fashioned but every race I have been too I didn't need real-time data to tell what place my driver was in and whether he was gaining or losing ground.

You are right on the mark about them needing to fix their existing service before jumping headlong into a new venture.
