Answer to a couple points
First: Assuming that Leaders of Congress were briefed, they were immediately gagged with a violation of national security and classified operation order which meant that even if they had objections they couldn't ask for a separate legal opinion on it.

Second: The NSA was told it was legal by the Attorney General, the very same one that is of the opinion that it is okay for the U.S. to engage in torturing detainees, at least in some instances.

Third: For my money there is something seriously wrong here when a rubber stamp secret court that can be gone to after the fact to issue a warrant is bypassed.

Fourth: The Democrats are in the minority in both the Senate and the House and therefore would not be able to bring any pressure for impeachment. The chance of a Republican Congress impeaching a Republican President, somewhat less than zero IMO.

Fifth: The Times may be Liberal but they sat on this story for a year at the request of the President before releasing it. They also printed quite a few stories before the Iraq war that helped the President make his case for going there. Does that make the President a Liberal too?

And last, IMO there are several provisions of the Patriot act that should never have been enacted, much less renewed.
