Sony, MS, Nintendo, Apple most all hardware companies
say they lose a money on their hardware, so want to make up and gain money on the software and services they sell for their platforms (either 1st or 3rd party). Sony and MS beat down chip modders and software modders because, if you buy the box but not the software, they've sold a box at a loss with little or no software to make up. Apple wants to retain control of the abilities of its iPod and will firmware az kick homebrew and Real's aftermarket software even though a user may have made the choice.

Making a console 'mod' friendly doesn't present itself a a money recuping action. Sony may provide a Linux kit to endear and inspire future programmers, but will sue mod chip makers and introduce hardware changes to thwart, and being 'live' on the internet gives them easier access to 'provide' the end-user with such 'upgrades', or to ban mod users (and in a rare case that a modded box is 'juiced' to unfairly participate in online games, rightfully so).

Usually, when Sony releases its console in the next year, we wouldn't read as much about it, but with its recent problems with cd protections, hackers may quickly take to taking the PS3 apart as well. Seeing what makes it tick, seeing what else it will and can do.

And hacking the box you paid for isn't a prob for me. You want to know how it works, the lay of the land, and to learn. Make your PS3 a part of your next Beowulf project or your porn dispenser, afteer the sale its not the biz of the maker, unless you take it into online gaming and exert a clearly unfair advantage over regular boxes, . . same for PC cheats.
