The game console market can be a very lucrative one if you happen to own a good piece of the pie.

Did you ever wonder why the console games are so outrageously expensive?

MS (and Sony) sell their console under priced and they take a hit on every console sold. They can do this because the game console is a 'locked-in' system. Once you have got it, you can only play games made for that console. You can't play PS2 game on XBox so they want to sell as many XBox machines as possible even with hefty losses.

The price is then moved to the price of the game. Microsoft takes a provision of every game sold for XBox, which makes the total price much higher than equivalent PC games.

Piracy is the achilles heel in this scenario. If you can easily pirate the games, you can never make the money back from the games sold, and you can not be profitable. The XBox unit has been running with negative balances for years now...it is not a cash cow, and pirates could keep it that way indefinately.
