My OS is bigger than your OS!

Why is it that every single talkback that has ANYTHING to do with an OS always spirals downward into the "My OS is better than your OS" discussion?

I will preface this by saying that I run both Windows and Linux systems, and have used Macs on occasion as well and I find positives and negatives in each OS.

Eventually these discussions turn to someone who says "Well, people are stupid and they should just switch to (insert OS here)". Most of the time these are in response to some issue with Windows.

The entire discussion is moot. Whether or not Linux or OS/X or whatever happens to be a better OS is fundamentally irrelevant.

Windows is on top because the one major force in their organization is their marketing department. They outmarket everyone, plain and simple.

For those of you old enough to remember, it's the classic VHS versus Betamax debate. Betamax was a far better system from a technological standpoint, but VHS was cheaper and better marketed so Betamax went the way of the dodo.

In the computer arena, there is a market for each of these OS'. Each one has its flaws and security holes. Each one does, in fact, have those flaws and security holes exploited. Linux users, in general, tend to be a slightly more savvy group, so the number of infections or exploitations are smaller.

I've been running Linux servers for quite a few years. I am very dilligent about security on my systems, however a couple of years ago, in doing some testing, I left a service open that wasn't patched and someone was able to hack into my server and caused a bit of damage. That's not to say that Linux is less secure because of that... it was a user error.

Now that I've managed to completely wander off topic, we'll now return to your regularly scheduled flaming.
