All of them were blocked either by my actions, my configuration, or my firewall and other protective software.

The important thing to remember is that Windows, IE and Outlook are shipped with very little security enabled and the security they have has weak points designed to make things 'easy'. Fortunately, there are good 3rd party tools to fill in these gaps. The examples you gave are ones that can only happen on a wide open system. Unfortunately this is the way Windows is shipped.
