I'm amazed that
some large desktop computer maker (IBM would seem
the most likely) has not put some energy into delivering
a ready to go Linux box. That would be one where you
plug it in and you?re ready to go.

Considering the fact that they could bundle an office
suite at little or no cost, along with browsers and e-mail
apps, you?d think that they?d find a decent market. The
fact that companies are hesitant to sign long term
contracts with MS (per their quarterly report) indicates
that there is a good bit of dissatisfaction out there.

Rule number 1 in marketing has always been product
differentiation. With PCs running Windows about the
only way for makers to differentiate is with price -
generally considered the WORST method of
differentiation.

A ready to go Linux machine - targeted at the corporate
market - would give some maker a way to differentiate in
a positive way, and could give them a way to increase
their per machine profit. The marketing could be pretty
straight forward. Just say that it?s more stable than
Windows and not subject to the constant worms.viruses.
Of course the cost would be less than a Windows box
with Office.

At this point I doubt that MS would retaliate too hard. A
little well aimed PR by the computer maker, stating that
they had complained to the DOJ, would put a lot of
pressure on the DOJ and the court vis-a-vis the
settlement.

I?m guessing that computer makers see intransigence as
their biggest impediment. While corporate bigwigs like
to talk about all the innovative things they're doing, they
usually are hesitant to ?rock the boat?. Maybe the
virus/worm problem would make them a little less
hesitant.
