- Impractical? What ya gonna do when the hammer falls
-
It is not beyond the realm of possibilty that some enterprising hacker or script kiddie sets up enough "zombie" machines to attack the net in such a massive proportion to slow the system to a halt. The zombie machines do not have to be WinXP or even Longhorn (when it arrives). Existing holes in non supported Win98 machines are still available for exploitation. I shudder to think how many 98/ME machines are still in use by the general populace. Blaster did not affect those machines, so why not get the worms/virii into machines that are not affected to be distributed to machines that are? That is what I would do. Farfetched FUD you say. Hmmm no one thought 911 would happen either. There are millions of unsupported machines now and when you consider that Win2k will soon be added to the unsupported lists with exploits intact beause Microsoft never offered a patch for existing exploits I still have to wonder when my scenario described above will come about.
Now you have Microsoft offering updates monthly. That leaves a long period of time that a new exploit can be exploited before MS issues a patch/fix/bandaid. Micorosoft IS responsible for their software no matter what the EULA says. One can blame lazy IT people and general consumers only so long for unplugged exploits before you realize the amount of unsupported software that MS has basically turned into abandonware is responsible for many of the DDOS attacks. Would you force people to "upgrade" when their software is "still working"? If you would then have identified Microsoft's plan to make money. BallheadmerGates has all but said if the end user wants to be secure they must upgrade. Blame the consumer can only work for so long. Hell Firestone was forced to recall and replace tires that were no longer in their sales inventory, Micorosoft should be held to that standard. BallheadmerGates own words have convicted them on the danger of their software to national security and the health of business operations.
When the crash comes and after you get back online give me a call about impracticle. Oh yeah before you slam me as an ABMer this machine I am posting on is Win2k locked down to the point technology and BallheadmerGates will allow. - Posted by: Squawkbox Posted on: 10/24/03 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
