Perl is an example of a something that has exceeded it's original design limits. Visual Basic is too convaluted? Having so many ways to do the same thing is Perl is not a strength but rather an example of it's weakness. You hate C but you love Perl? Why, was C too easy to read? I have seen some Perl code that was more difficult to read that any C code that I have seen and some people can write some really illegible C code. Also, nearly all of the Perl code that I have seen is also some of the poorest maintained code. CPAN is a PRIME example, what an mess! Every time I have brought up a new Linux box and attempted to download modules from CPAN I quickly run across problems of compatibility or failure to compile, I always need to fix it myself. The only reason why I am competent with Perl is because I needed to fix so much Perl code in the past.

If a Perl script exceeds 2 pages in length, it would probably be a good idea to rethink the choice of tools.

If everyone will love you because you are a Perl programmer it is because your predecessor left a mess and they need someone else to fix it.

PHP and Python are much better designed tools, anyone using FOSS would be better off following that path.
