Sigh
1) Email is not a function of the OS, not even in Windows. It is a separate program. Is email an OS-integrated function in Linux or anything else? No.
2) This trojan was NOT run out of the email program, anyway. It was a ZIP file. So, the email program passed the attachment to yet ANOTHER non-integrated program, from which the user was able to execute it.

Let's say that tomorrow the US government declares the use of Windows to be illegal and shuts down MS. The other countries of the world follow suit. Do you REALLY think it will solve all the problems in the world, or even specifically ones like this?

Every technically inept computer user suddenly has to switch to some version of Linux (they aren't going to switch hardware, most likely, so OS/X is out for most). They don't know what they are doing, so they don't configure it properly. Yes, it's more secure out of the box, but the determined user who wants things to work easily ("like they did before") finds a way to circumvent most built-in security. Companies and industries spring up around making Linux easier to use for the average home-type user (many of these companies run by former MS employees who are now out of work).

So now we have a bunch of idiots running a more technical OS in unsecured ways, using products designed to make their experience function like their old OS did. This is somewhat scary and I'm not sure it would be better than what we have now.

Then, there are the people who create these viruses/trojans/worms/etc.. Unless they are all just ideological fanatics whose entire goal it was to put MS out of business, do they just give up now that MS is illegal? Whoops, everyone's on Linux, which we all *know* is unbreakable, so let's just give up?

I don't think so.
