Repost: What a sad stste of affairs.
Once upon a time there was a band of brave men and women that had a dream of people in all walks of life, from every corner of the world being able to communicate, exchange information, and share the burden of improving the human condition. So began the internet...

All that knew computers seen the advantages and benefits to everyone and they set upon building this open and free system of exchange. Software was written to make it simple enough that anyone, anywhere could use it. Design it so that with a single mouse click, a window on the entire world is opened to them. Yes! Make it simple for my grandmother, make it simple for the 6 year old in Africa, make it simple for the young liberal in communist countries so they may see the world. Make it simple!!!

The call was heard and it was made simple, it was made open, and it was a trusting environment. After all, who in their right mind would want to destroy anything so fantastic and so important to the human race? We were certain that anyone that would try to harm this paradise would quickly be taken care of by the rest of the people.

Alas, it was not to be. The very openness we wanted is the very thing that allowed the lowest form of humanity to ruin it. Like the snake in the garden of Eden, these dredges of humanity visited upon us their vileness. But surly the people will not allow this, surly they will see the dredges for what they are and deal with them!

No, again it was not to be. Instead of dealing with the scum, the people instead turned on the developers that gave them the open communication blaming them for the acts committed by the scum. Fort builders in the guise of security companies began walling off the "open" communication and all the trust was destroyed.

Even large numbers of the people began to cheer the scum on and took delight in watching the exploits of these vermin. It's like seeing otherwise intelligent and caring people lose all sense of reason and dancing by the fire light of a book burning.

It's hard to know who to detest more. The lowest of humanity that knows nothing but destruction, or the simple minded that cheer them on and toss more books on the pyre.

A sad state of affairs indeed...
