---Legally purchase the music you want in any format... Then download full quality, no-DRM'ed tracks from p2p.---

Really bad advice, as this is clearly a legal grey area. You do have a right to format shift the material you've purchased, but many legal experts believe this does not include downloading the material from someone else (which is clearly illegal). More info on this:

It is not legal to do this. It's legal to transfer your songs from
your cassette, album or VHS to CD or DVD, it's just not legal to
download the songs from the P2P networks to do so.

As to the why it's illegal, well, because that's what the courts
have said. Specifically, see AMG v. Napster, you could also
Google the MP3.com case, both of those cases have held that
transferring a digital music file over the internet is illegal, even if
you have a "right" to own the digital copy.
