Tightrope walking indeed
Companies want to hire people and retain them, which often includes making them happy. People want to be happy in their work, which sometimes includes using devices such as an iPod or similar music device which can also store non-music data.

The two do not alway coincide peacefully.

If you want to remain happy and avoid lawsuits and/or criminal prosecution, make sure that you do not take any data to which you have no legal right. If you do not own it legally, or if it is not open-source & covered by the GNU or similar agreement, then don't take it.

While it is true that the overwhelming majority of computer criminal prosecutions in the USA are related to child pornography, elections are coming up. People running for office will always try to push a "slam-dunk" case through the justice system to help show that they are "tough on crime".

If you are uncertain whether or not you have the right to take something, assume that you don't until you are able to email your supervisor and get their emailed response.

Even forwarding company emails to a yahoo or gmail or msn acct can be considered IP theft under the right conditions. If you need more guidance, speak to a lawyer &/or look up your state's laws about cybercrime.
