Continuation of Radical . . .
I agree with Pagan Jim's comments but to add to it - the reason(s) that so many employees want these gadgets and are malicious toward their employers is because of the work enviorment that has evolved in the last few years. In my opinion - there are to many in the managment of many businesses that are give choices from above them that go something to the effect of: Do the right logical/common sense thing that while it may hurt in the short term is good for the long term of both the employee and the company; do the quick and dirty that earns me the mighty bonus today/makes the company look good for this quarter/makes no sense/applies no logic or common sense/ does not even consider the employee in any way.
There is virtually nothing of seniority or otherwise with most employers today. Human Resource departments spend more time and resources on discipling/controlling employees than they do on actually caring about the long term of either the employees or their companies.
Used to work for a company that was privately owned and ran well until the owner passed away. The family then let rest of upper managment do what they wanted which was basically to grow the company - no matter what with concern for the employees or otherwise - as long as two key people and those who were buddies w/them earned their bonus. Company reached a certain size and sold!!! But they went thru quite a few problems with employees messing with their systems and so forth. Much security and many policies were implemented - the more they did the worse it got because they (managment) created an extremly hostile enviorment while they pursued their bonus program and fast growth so the company could be sold. I left the company before it was sold because I could see what was happening.
The company I work for now has been around for 100 years+; cares about it's employees and the company as a whole from a long-term standpoint and not a short-term; is growing by 100%+ year in sales; makes a huge deal out of employees who stay with the company for many years; is a win-win situation for everyone involved. It is not that we are not concerned about security but because managment is not devoting all of it's time and resources toward satisfying it's bonus program and short term growth and profits.
To summarize and finish my point - a lot of companies would not have to devote so much time and resources toward security if they would devote it instead toward long term growth and listen effectively to their employees plus make decisions based again on the long-term and not just because it helps them earn their bonus this day/this week/this month etc. Enought said!
