Just what Sony is counting on.
"I know some of the artists whose work was ruined by Sony's digital grafitti are very angry about what's been done, and I'm sure others feel the same way."

Could you post some links to the statements the bands have made to this effect? I'll bet they are so angry they... well... they can barely cash their royalty checks! We know how most bands stand on totally irrelevant issues such as Iraq and 3rd world debt. Strange that there isn't a concert to lobby for the abolition of DRM... But don't forget "It's really all about the fans".

When it comes to music, the band is the brand. No one goes into a music store and says "Have any new Sony?". Sony is banking on customers not holding the artists they promote accountable, so they don't have any risk in doing this kind of thing. From Sony's perspective, each artist is a sort of brand of it's own, and valued based on how each is perceived by the consumer. Only if you hold the band accountable will Sony feel the pain.

Regarding artists suing Sony and changing labels, I would say sure I'll give those who actually do this a pass. But at this point, not holding the bands accountable plays right into Sony's hand.
