Sony no isolated case, this is the scary future.
Sony's 3l33t h4x0rz tactics blew up on their faces because consumers have choice and some legal rights. Like the rest of you I too am disgusted with Sony and as far as I can help it, will not buy Sony products again.

Unfortunately it does not end there. This incident is just the tip of the iceberg. With the RIAA/MPAA's legal muscle, money power and contacts, I would not be surprised if 2 years in the future, every record label shipped rootkits and it were made legal due to RIAA's strong arm tactics and some future version of the DMCA. Truly, folks, this is not all that far fetched.

To give you an idea of what's already on the pipeline, look at how Windows Vista / Longhorn will work with the new HD-DVD/BluRay media for high def content. Please pick up Nov 2005's PC-World magazine if you have the time, there's an article there. The new Microsoft OS will contain a systemwide content protection scheme called PVP-OPM which goes all the way down to your hardware, main board, processor, and display unit. If it detects anything out of place it will disallow playback. You CAN'T connect your expensive, hi-tech high def display (unless it's HDCP enabled, which is extremely rare) to this new hardware you MUST purchase in order to play the new high def content.

Want to skip this headache? Sorry. XP will not play with HD-DVD/BluRay high def content, upgrade to the next windoze version. Give more money to m$ and the record/film industry. Just locks you in to an endless cycle of upgrades and wasted money, and locking you out of your own hardware or software (no way you can make a backup copy of a HD-DVD fellers, we'll have the law at your door in 2 mins).

Why do they have this? To be bedfellows with the film and entertainment industry, MPAA/RIAA. The film industry has created a content protection scheme called AACS, and if microsoft wants to play along (which they do, obviously), they need to conform.

So as you can see, when the players are not a monopoly like Sony, customers have a choice and a voice. When the really big players get in, they make sure laws are written to support them, and if they are monopolies like microsoft, then we have no choice.

The Sony incident must not be taken lightly, it looks like they were just testing the waters for more dreadful things to come. Customers must respond decisively and vocally (which is what is happening).
