Rationally?? You ask too much....
To think that a corporation is either "rational" or "considerate" is naive. The "Corporates" are not humans, they are cash registers - period.

They will consistently try to screw the consumer out of every buck they can get using whatever tactic(s) they think they can get away with. The problem here is that Sony misjudged what they could get away with. It was a mistake yes, but had nothing at all to do with rationality or consideration for the consumer.
