could never have worked on a nix system, whereas it would work on all Windows machines in which the owner did not go out of their way to prevent autoexecution or program installation from the regular user.

Rootkits demand that you execute a program as root. If you do not have root permissions (and by default you don't, whereas in Windows by default you do) then rootkits cannot be installed. And if you do not have autoexecution of unknown programs (and again, by default you do not in Unix but do with Windows) then the rootkit can only be installed through the manual execution of the infected program. So the simple act of inserting a CD in your computer cannot install a rootkit in Unix/Linux, whereas it can and does in Windows unless you take preventative measures which only we educated few know about.
