Slow down Chum...your way too quick..
About the slow machine theory, while a very old machine, say like 5 years old is likely going to be of a configuration that?s going to ?feel the pain? with a solid security system installed, and a slightly old machine, say 2-3 years old is probably going to experience some slower boot times but is likely to run fairly quick once its up and running if its being well maintained, the fact is a newer machine, less then a year old is not going to feel any real pain at all.
I just had a system built for my sister with a P4 3.2 CPU and a gig of DDR2 ram and its got a good load of security that loads on start up, Norton system works included, as well as a couple other resource robbing apps that launch on start up and it can still be up and already surfing on the net within 90 seconds of the on button being pushed, and while that may not be lightning speed, I hope we haven?t gotten to a point in life where if we are not on our favourite website in under 60 seconds of hitting the on button things are moving to slow.
As far as performance once its running, response is virtually instant even with multiples of multiple document types open along with surfing, messaging, webcams, printing and any number of other things on the go, so the good security is not going to create any speed issue for any reasonable person.
And doing a reinstall every 6 months? Well, I?m not going to argue too strongly against that. The reason is, I am only running with a 40 gig HD, and I slice and dice it daily and despite frequent maintenance and care, the smaller HD can take only so much major and frequent revision before it gets a little messy. Mind you, its been almost a year since my last reformat, but I am feeling the pain. On the other hand, there are many users out there who don?t abuse their HD anything like I do, I personally know people who haven?t reformatted in almost 2 years and their machine still has lots of sizzle, so don?t make to broad a claim about the reformatting because an awful lot of people, particularly with newer well maintained systems are not going to have to reformat for a very long time.
Save your obvious dislike for Windows for chats with your buddies if you want to continue giving advice that doesn?t apply in the real world.
