Alot about a stable Windows experience is the user
a lot of people have no head for security, privacy, or the threat of their 'neighors'. I've had one issue with XP Pro at home, at that was SP2 not playing nice with an exotic piece of PCI hardware or vice versa (the end solution of installing XP with SP2 already bypassed that drawn out upgrade). Besides that, I know to use a good firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio, use antivirus, use a Power or Limited Account for day to day and Administrator sparingly, don't leave the network or the PC on 24/7 (its a waste if you're not using it or heaven forbid, acting as a server for who knows what), limit your 'visits' to bad or questionable sites, set your browser zones or use a different browser, etc. With a little forethought, you have a secured PC and I've not noted a significant impact to speed or performance (though with Symantec you'll always get a performance hit.)

But it seems a lot of people get a computer, hook up to the net, don't use any of the above precautions, and expect that nothing bad can come of it, even when they open their PCs up to P2Ps of questionable nature or e-mails of definite bad nature. Wonder how much of their bad experiences they would migrate to other OSes. Harder yes, but somebody would make some pretty malware that they would just have to open, or a program that does one thing in front of them and hidden things behind the scenes.

As for the people who post their opinions on this OS's lack of anything, it's either their true experience or their game to say so. Some have the earnest desire that Windows improves or gets out of the way (I for one think so much of the code is spaghetti from a time when Windows wasn't internet connected, but I truly hope for and press that Windows improves greatly with Vista and I've liked the strides from 98 to XP though I prefer the less Macafied look and quick access of 2k). Others don't, they may post just to knock something so targetted. It's not like Zdnet produces a great amount of computing 'community'. Watch others bash Linux or Apple. All this stuff cycles itself into each OS thread and some wonder why.
