FAQ: Sony's 'rootkit' CDs

They should state what their CD's carry...

If a person buys a CD from them containing this program, that should be visible from the cover, so that he user is not met with ugly surprises. Supose a secretary buys such CD to listen to music at her work's PC, and she does not know the CD carries such a program until the a Window pops askin her to give her permison to install software so she can listen to the music she has already payed for. She might get mad (and with reason) if there is no such notice on the CD cover (or a sticker on the protective celofain case cover). However, the existance of such a software may go unnoticed by a guy who buys CDs to listen in his car while he's driving across vast highways. He may not give a dime about the DRM technology, since he'll be using an old-school CD-Player, not a computer to listen to the tracks. Still, Sony shoul have steted what the CD would when inserted into a computer (I've seen such CD's and IMO the notice is quite unnoticeable)
