For the chosen few...
While I won't deny MS is (finally) doing something about security, this article does produce some holes of it's own if it's to be taken to heart.

"The updated application will be part of Vista"

Here we go once again bundling an app with the new version of Windows. While I have no problem having it ship with Vista, I hope they give us the option of installing it instead of bolting it in. Otherwise, I'm against the lack of choice and we could see MS back in antitrust courtrooms.

" Microsoft will also release Windows Defender for XP users. It will be released as an update to the current edition of Windows AntiSpyware, which has been available in a beta version since January."

I see no mention of Win2K users here. Are they saying upgrade the OS before it stops working completely? Granted, they forgot 2003 Server as well, but then you shouldn't have a spyware issue on a server as long as it's patched and has antivirus installed.

" 'The timing for Beta 2 has not been determined. The internal goal for us is Dec. 31, but that is flexible,' the representative said. "

Well, it better be more of a sooner flexible than later flexible. The current beta expires on Dec. 31st, so if it is later, even XP users are pooched.
