Your comparison is flawed.

Navy Seals don't bust into any random facility or building. (Say my house) And then offer their services to secure the facility or building. (Say my house)

If they tried to do that, they would be shot or I would shot. It's as simple as that.

And this is why hackers have so much trouble getting respect and trust. You don't understand the "rules of engagement" for CIVILIZED society.

And you talking about "not trashing a system" would be the same as a RENEGADE Navy Seal busting into my house and then leaving and stating... "But I didn't steal anything... I didn't trash the place... I didn't murder anyone."

TRUE ethical hacking from the general public's viewpoint is what you describe later... And I quote "restrict our hacking to hacking our own private network of our own PC's. Occasionally we are hired by companies to hack into their network...penetration testing." This IS considered acceptable.

It's really not that hard to understand.

By the general public, uninvited hacking is considered the same as breaking and entering, physical assault, picking someone's pocket, etc...

All of the crimes I listed actually can be ridiculously minor. For example, you could break into someone's house just to test the security, not touch anything, make sure to lock the place up when you leave, etc... But that would still upset people.

The general public is only holding you to the same rules that they hold other "security experts" to.
