not all bad
I've considered myself a hacker since the early 80's when I was a young teenager. I don't consider myself a hacker because I can break into networks or write virii. I can look at a TCP dump and read it like most people read a short story. I enjoy going beyond what most people don't even know exist. I have a talent. I talent that God gave me to communicate with computers better than I can speak with another human being. I have never used my knowlege to illegally prosper myself. (Believe me, I've been destitute and poor and never even thought of using what I know for ill-gotten gains). I've never done damage to others systems... ... .. uh, well, at least others that didn't deserve it (I kept a internet child stalker from being able to log on to the internet for a few days without his computer crashing, but I don't feel very bad about that). To say that all hackers are bad, is not based on truth. And to idolize other hackers for their knowlege and the contributions they have made to society is not the same thing as accepting criminal behavour. I have done many stupid things when I was younger and less mature, and other things that are considered illegal now. When I was 12 and 13, the knowlege I gained from my hacking experiences could never have been learned in any classes or college courses.

Plus not many people have experienced code wars, where a group of hackers (8 or more) access a network and beat the heck out of each other until there is only one left standing. As a child, that was more fun than any video game or anything. I miss those days, and the relationships that were built that are all but lost now. when such activities became officially illegal a decade or so ago, I no longer participated, I truely miss those days. Anyone that hasn't experienced this could never possibly understand.
