The Spirit of 1776
The spirit of the American Revolution and our Declaration of Independence is alive and well.

Sometimes in doing the right thing we violate the law; sometimes in doing the wrong thing we keep the law.

We are not a nation of laws - we are a nation of principles, as expressed in Declaration of Independence and enforced by the American War of Independence. Most people don't understand the nuances. Principles are an expression of our fundamental morality. Our laws are supposed to be an expression of our principles.

1)Morality superceeds flawed Principles;
2)Principles superceeds flawed laws;
2)Laws never superceeds 1 and 2 above.

What happens in a courtroom doesn't usually reflect reality. I have a friend who is a state prosecutor, and I asked this question: If I commit a computer crime from my bedroom that would be classified as a felony, and I have a gun in the same room, would the gun be a factor in how I am charged and eventually convicted? Her answer was "Yes, depending on the ego of the prosecutor". Thus, I could be convicted of committing a felony while in possession of a firearm and would have 25 years added to my sentence.

Now, the reality is that the gun had absolutely nothing to do with the actual crime committed!

The bottomline is that the conviction rarely reflects the reality of what really happened.

We cheer Helen Keller for her family's violation of German Nazi law that prohibited sheltering Jews to hide them from authorities. We cheer Nelson Mandella in his leading a peaceful revolt against the white-only govt of South Africa. Both individuals were criminals in their own country.
