Flawed logic...
By using your logic, no one should listen to a Navy SEAL either on how to break into a facility. As far as Mitnick being a convicted criminal...a gospel preacher in China is also, thus by your logic no one should listen to his sermons.

The law only defines what is legal and illegal; the law never defines issues of morality. Many things are legal yet immoral; many things are illegal yet moral.

Old school hackers: we never trashed a system without permission, unless it was in an effort to bring some right out of a greater wrong...like erasing the HD or DoS of a site hosting child porn, etc. Ethical hackers are the real deal. Don't confuse us with criminals who use our methods to steal from you.

As far as computer security, the finest are ethical hackers...the real deal. We work hard to make your data more secure.

Old time hackers, some of whom were never caught doing anything wrong, used primitive PC's and needed to access larger systems in order to be able to do real number crunching...during late hours when a mainframe was sitting idle. Hackers invented the field of distributed parallel computing...a necessity of the time. Today, with PC's being so inexpensive and so powerful, we now buy several and mostly restrict our hacking to hacking our own private network of our own PC's. Occasionally we are hired by companies to hack into their network...penetration testing.

Some of us has decided to work full time as a legit hacker...a true professional security expert in the field, that no non-hacker can hold a candle to.
