It takes one to know one...
I think the old saying "It takes one to know one" fits the bill here. It's rather like how Frank Abagnale, Jr. (the guy that Leonardo DiCaprio played in the movie "Catch Me if You Can") is now a consultant in the banking industry after an infamous career as a check forger. Let's face it, being able to think like a crook helps you catch them.

Mitnick's books are easy reads. They highlight some very chilling examples of how easy it is for people to use Social Engineering (among other techniques) to access information that they otherwise wouldn't be able to get. One of his books ("The Art of Deception") is a required text for an Information Systems security class I am taking. I found the stories so interesting and informative that I went out and picked up his other title ("The Art of Intrusion").
