- The Mac market share is a bit bigger than 5%
-
as for Linux and FreeBSD, well since the new Mac OSX is based on the FreeBSD kernel... they are actually at the kernel level the same. Linux has a much larger market share as well, not in the US but other markets that the US seems to conveneiently forget about. Then there is also the server market but that is not truly valid in this topic.
One of the things that people also conveniently overlook is the fact that Mac users don't always buy new systems, but many times will upgrade just the OS, and this has a tendancy to skew the market share concept as well. Linux is free to download so tracking that is pretty much futile as well.
This is a decent site, but by no means truly representitive of the actual numbers of Linux installs, but the point is to show where Linux is strong and where it is not.
By nations registered if you look at the percentage based on population you get a rough idea.
A bit more information
Again this is not a true count, and there most likely never will be. Which is too bad. But based on the numbers that have registered I would venture to say that there is a shared market of about 10-15% for Linux in various roles around the world.
I feel market share is nothing more than a tool to bamboozle people with numbers to inflate real value or skew perception. And to be honest usually I don't really pay attention to it. If something is disliked, no matter it's size, someone will go after it if they can. It's that simple. - Posted by: Linux Advocate Posted on: 11/01/05 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
