Well actually you have the right idea but are wrong...
If you REALLY want a powerful delivery mechanism, that is more prevelant then you would go after UNIX Main Frames and various other server farms and even better the Cisco and other types of routers. Not little desktops.

If someone really REALLY wants to get a digital message out there, then take out the servers and routers that serve the web pages of these companys. Take out there core infrastructure and central storage, you will most definitly get someones attention then!

You see it's like in Naval combat (ex US Navy here), you can sit there and duke it out all day long and still not get anywhere in the battle, sure you inflict casualties and damage but your opponent is still capable of completing his mission. Take out his engineering plant, and you have beaten him soundly, game over, you win. The same applies here in the digital battle field. You can knock off desktops all day long, and you make a dent and cause some damage, piss off a few people in the process. But take out the servers and routers and you beat your opponent and prevent him from making more money at the same time costing him a lot to recover.

So the statement of going after the largest base is in reallity a falsehood. Think about it really hard before you refute this. How easy is it to compromise a server and take it out so it can't be brought back online for a very long time if ever? And then think about this, how much of the internet relies on UNIX / Linux / *BSD / Cisco compared to Apple / Novel and Windows. Now how easy is it to compromise a Windows desktop? It's not volume, it's ease of access and circumvention.

In combat you want to defeat your opponent quickly and soundly, taking out mom and pop is not really all that effective, at least for doing heavy damage.

Something to think about...
