- RE: real money lost?
-
First of all, if you enjoy listening to a song or using a piece
of software that an artist or company has made available
for sale, you should pay for it. People should be paid for
their hard work just as you are paid to do whatever job you
do. It doesn't get any more elementary than that.
Second, artists get paid in all kinds of different ways
depending on their contracts and roles, but as for the free
promotion helping sell more concert tickets, keep in mind
that not all artists tour. Many hit songs today are written by
someone other than who records it. Those songwriters,
often times, get paid only from royalties from album/single
sales and publishing. Having the artist tour does little for
them. It's easy to say that "the record companies are evil,
and I'm not going to give those greedy bastards any more
money", and I don't disagree. They are greedy, but the truth
is, they're going to get their share one way or another. The
losses they incur will always trickle down to the little guy
meaning that artists, writers, and producers will make less
money in the future, and they will only bank on acts that
they're sure will do well, like Britney Spears, and Justin
Timberlake, who are entertainers, not artists. The real
artists will be ignored by the bigger labels because they
aren't a guaranteed money-maker, and they'll be relegated
to smaller indie labels that don't have the marketing &
promotion muscle to bring them to the masses. Then
everyone complains that there's no good music out there,
that it's all just fake boy-band garbage, so they won't pay
for music, which just continues the viscious cycle.
Hopefully the digital music revolution with distribution
models like iTunes Music Store will fuel another revolution
that changes the role of the record company or even
eliminates it's need altogether, but the bottom line is, in
the long run, trading music is bad for everyone. As much as
many try to say it's a blow to the greed of the corporate
monster, it's really just fuelled by personal greed. - Posted by: ndelc Posted on: 01/29/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
