Yeah ... but
This is more than that. This is a great way of creating a volunteed segmentation among the huge database, and making the groups easier to target and motivate.

Think of it as a marketing scheme that not only has access to your email address, but the one address that you ACTUALLY check everyday. On top of that, they also know your skills/knowledge, and can specifically shape the language to attend their goal, whether it's calming the public or creating FUD.
